The Wildland Firefighter Squad Boss is a lead worker and gives guidance to a squad of firefighters, to ensure appropriate work and safety practices are implemented on fires and other emergencies, and to ensure completion of various fuels projects.

This position works on wildfires and is exposed to burns, smoke inhalation, heat exhaustion, and extensive hard labor; works in emergency situations and may be exposed to uncertain conditions, bad weather, hazardous materials, etc.; works on fuels reduction projects which require the use of power and hand tools which have an element of risk, hard labor, and exposure to falling trees; and works in rough terrain and adverse weather conditions.

C andidates should have and provide copies of NWCG Training to the FFT1 level to include the following courses:
  • S-130/190 Basic Wildland Firefighter
  • S-131 Advanced Firefighter
  • S-212 Wildland Fire Chainsaws

Licenses and Certifications:
A valid driver license is required.

Must be able to pass the NWCG ArduousWork Capacity Test.

The Ideal Candidate Will Have:
Qualifications as an Type 1 Firefighter, a type 5 Incident Commander, and a type 2 Faller are preferred. At least two seasons of wildland fire experience and at least one season of that on a hand crew; and have done fuels mitigation work for structures in the wildland fire environment are preferable.

Knowledge of:
  • supervision of a squad on wildfire assignments, on non-wildfire assignments, and during day-to-day project work;
  • power tools and equipment typically used in fire and emergency situations such as chainsaws, axes, shovels, picks, etc.;
  • equipment maintenance and safety practices.

Skill to:
  • basic supervision and communication skills;
  • operate 4 wheel drive vehicles in off road and winter conditions;
  • operate All-Terrain Vehicles utilizing the Tread Lightly concept;
  • operate and field program a digital Bendix King Radio;
  • read maps and operate a handheld GPS to create tracks, waypoints, and obtain Location for calling in air resources.

Ability to:
  • perform basic equipment maintenance;
  • provide work direction and assignment to others;
  • use mobile and hand held radios;
  • communicate information clearly and concisely;
  • maintain required physical fitness standards.
