The duties of a DCI Victim Witness Specialist include providing direct services to victims of crime; acting as the liaison between the victim, the prosecutor, and law enforcement officials; advising victims of legal proceedings and assisting as they navigate through the criminal court process; accompaning victims in criminal proceedings as requested; assisting in determining the amount of monetary damage suffered by the victim; participating in the training of law enforcement and the general public regarding the victimization process, victim needs and issues; helping file compensation claims.

The Ideal Candidate Will Have:
A firm understanding of the criminal justice system and the criminal justice process. The ideal candidate will be kind, caring, and empathetic.
Knowledge of:
- role and function of law enforcement, judicial and legal agencies;
- basic judicial procedures and court documents;
- principles of interviewing and other information-gathering techniques.
Skills to:
- deal tactfully with others;
- communicate clearly and concisely.
Abilities to:
- interpret and explain laws, rights, policies and procedures;
- maintain records, prepare reports and correspondence, and related work;
- organize time and resources to achieve deadlines and goals;
- effectively communicate and negotiate with others, verbally and in writing, in a pleasant and tactful manner;
- establish and maintain effective working relationships with victims, families, non-custodial parents, co-workers, court staff, and public officials;
- maintain confidential clients' records;
- navigate crisis and trauma;
- participate in training to stay current on issues, resources, and networking;
- assist with SAVIN and victim impact statements.

This position is exempt from the Civil Service Act.
This position is eligible for Veterans' Preference per ARSD 55:10:02:08.
