The South Dakota Department of Health Office of Public Health Preparedness and Response manages multiple warehouses containing critical supplies and equipment used in emergency response. As part of the Public Health Preparedness and Response team, the Logistics Coordinator contributes to ensuring strong public health and healthcare system readiness. This position will serve as a project manager for warehouse operations, including conducting hard counts of inventory, organizing warehouse contents using a grid system, receiving items into the inventory management system, and developing a comprehensive standard operating procedure manual for all warehouse tasks. The position is also responsible for overseeing the purchase and maintenance of items and services required for inventory and warehouse operations.

The Public Health Preparedness Logistics Coordinator is responsible for managing South Dakota's medical materiel preparedness and response activities. This role ensures the effective distribution, deployment, and utilization of medical materiel during public health emergencies, including pandemics, natural disasters, and bioterrorism events.

Key responsibilities include overseeing the inventory, storage, and maintenance of stockpile assets within the state to ensure they are ready for rapid deployment. During emergencies, the Coordinator will manage medical materiel orders and allocations, ensuring that supplies are distributed to the appropriate agencies and healthcare facilities. The Logistics Coordinator serves on a team that works to ensure adequate public health and healthcare preparedness and response to public health emergencies and/or emergencies with health implications.

This position will work in both office and warehouse settings. The office setting involves sitting at a desk for extended periods, working on a computer, and performing administrative tasks. The warehouse setting may include frequent lifting, moving, and handling of products, some of which may be heavy and may require operating forklifts, pallet jacks, and other warehouse equipment.

Licenses and Certifications:

  • forklift certification preferred, not required;
  • ability to drive a pickup, pull a trailer, and back up to a trailer preferred, but not required.


The Ideal Candidate Will Have:
  • strong organization, communication, and problem-solving skills;
  • experience in developing and maintaining standard operating procedures;
  • experience in local and/or state public health preparedness;
  • experience learning new technological systems, maintaining systems, and teaching others on the use of systems.

Knowledge of:
  • computer applications, including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook;
  • warehouse operations, inventory control, and supply chain management;
  • best practices for storage, handling, and maintenance of critical supplies and equipment;
  • familiarity with local, state, and federal government operations;
  • familiarity with potential public health threats, desired but not required.

Skills to:
  • manage warehouse operations;
  • maintain a fleet of vehicles and equipment to include pickups, trailers, and forklifts;
  • effectively utilize inventory management systems;
  • organize and structure processes to enhance efficiency and effectiveness;
  • develop and maintain working relationships with key stakeholders;

  • independently problem-solve, think critically, and manage time.

  • coordinate maintenance and service on medical equipment, building systems, and vehicles;
  • implement state public health preparedness policies and procedures effectively.
