Job Description:
This rewarding position involves managing a staff of roughly 12 people and all the activities they perform within three different shops throughout the Aberdeen Area. Activities can include but are not limited to surface repair on State highways; management and care of the State's highway right-of-way; snow plowing and treating of State highways to keep them safe and drivable during winter storms; maintaining millions of dollars worth of state assets including facilities/grounds, equipment, pavements, highway signs/delineation, and drainage structures including bridges and box culverts. This job is very rewarding knowing you have provided a great service to all highway users by keeping our highways safe.
This position requires a person with strong leadership, communication and management skills to lead and direct highway maintenance staff to carry out duties aligned with the Department's mission, core values and strategic objectives. This position serves as a supervisor and performs a variety of duties including, but not limited to identifying and evaluating highway maintenance needs; planning, monitoring & performing maintenance activities; coordinating highway maintenance resources; providing input and monitoring multiple maintenance-related budgets; managing assigned facilities, equipment, vehicles and assets; attending training and identifying training needs/opportunities for staff and participating in all personnel actions involving subordinates including hiring, performance reviews, disciplinary actions as necessary, and career growth and development.
From approximately May 1 to September 30, the anticipated work schedule for this position is 10-hour days, 4 days per week from Monday through Thursday each week. From approximately October 1 - April 30, the anticipated work schedule for this position is eight-hour days, Monday through Friday. Night and shift work will be required, including working weekend hours and holidays during emergencies and inclement weather.
Work assignments are frequently performed outside in all weather conditions and around highway traffic.
Incumbent must have a valid driver license and must have or obtain a valid commercial driver license (CDL) within 120 days of hire date to retain employment. The incumbent must have a Class A CDL with the tanker endorsement and no restrictions in order to operate any Class A vehicle that is a truck-tractor/semi-trailer, with manual transmission. The CDL must include an N endorsement (tank vehicle) for specific positions and must have no transmission restrictions. Employee will be subject to pre-employment, random, reasonable-suspicion, post-accident, follow up, and return-to-duty drug and alcohol testing.
Incumbent must be willing and able to report to work for inclement weather conditions and other highway emergencies; and must be able to report to their home station within 30 minutes, under normal driving conditions, from the time of notification.
Pursuant to SDCL 32-12A, applicants will be required to authorize the Department of Transportation to obtain a complete driving record. Applicants living outside of South Dakota may be asked to provide a motor vehicle record from their state of residence.
Incumbent is eligible to receive $5.00 per hour winter maintenance premium pay when responding to and performing winter maintenance duties during a weekend and/or holiday.

Desired Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of:
- Department of Transportation policies and procedures pertaining to highway construction, maintenance, repair, and rehabilitation (desirable but not required);
- human resources practices sufficient to supervise personnel (desirable but not required);
- highway maintenance equipment (desirable for not required);
- winter highway maintenance techniques;
- methods, materials, and techniques used to perform road maintenance activities;
- mathematics sufficient to calculate cost estimates, volumes, quantities, and time;
- preventative maintenance methods such as changing oil, rotating tires and lubricating parts
Skill to:
- supervisor the work of others (desirable but not required);
- operate computers and use Microsoft software;
- analyze/interpret weather information and its impact on maintenance activities.

Position Requirements:

New Unit 152 Highway Maintenance Supervisor will be required to report to work in either Aberdeen. Must live within 30 minutes of Aberdeen.
Compensation:
The total compensation of Hourly Wage + State/Federal Benefits for a typical year for entry level Highway Maintenance Worker is approximately $83,439.00 annually.
This position is eligible for Veterans' Preference per ARSD 55:10:02:08.
