The Grounds Crew Leader/Specialist directs the work of Grounds Keepers and participates in grounds maintenance, including the care of lawns, trees, flowers, shrubs, and sidewalks; and/or serves as the expert in landscaping and flower design/care to ensure state grounds are properly cared for and are well maintained and aesthetically pleasing.
The incumbent should be highly motivated and have the ability to work as a team with other Buildings and Grounds programs to carry out the assigned duties and have a valid Driver's License, and a Class B CDL with airbrakes, and a commercial applicator's license.
Work hours are 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday - Friday. Will occasionally be required to work outside of the regularly established schedule, which may involve on-call time during nights and weekends at certain times of the year.
Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
Licenses and Certifications:
The incumbent must possess or have the ability to obtain a Driver's License, and a Class B CDL with airbrakes, and a commercial applicator's license within 90 days of hire.
The Ideal Candidate Will Have:
- gardening and grounds maintenance practices;
- safe use of fertilizers, insecticides, and herbicides;
- safe disposal of hazardous wastes;
- landscaping techniques;
- sprinkler and irrigation systems; and
- types and varieties of trees, flowers, and plants.
- organize and delegate assignments;
- recognize and diagnose plant diseases;
- identify insect destruction and the necessary corrective actions;
- follow oral and written instructions;
- perform heavy lifting and physical labor; and
- operate motorized vehicles, hand and power tools, and related equipment.
