Position Description:
Intern will be working with, scheduling and directing to tasks of volunteers and seasonal staff in all aspects of the operations and maintenance of a State Park or Recreation Area along with other areas as assigned. Essential duties may include, but are not limited to the following: manage a pesticide application program to minimize encroachment of noxious and undesired weeds, by applying restricted and non restricted chemicals to affect the spread of Canada thistle, buckthorn, leafy spurge and other undesirable plants. Candidate will take part in the maintenance efforts pertaining to grounds and facilities including turf, native prairie and forestry management. Tasks will include mowing turf, planting trees, trimming trees, tree removal, and landscaping. Facility maintenance will include cleaning, making repairs, painting and introduction to plumbing, electrical and common systems operation for facilities in state parks. Intern will be required to identify one project to lead and complete over the course of the summer to successfully complete the internship.

Qualifications : Applicant must be a full-time student at a college, university or technical institute at the time they apply. By the start of the internship, the applicant should have at least a sophomore standing or currently be enrolled at a technical institute and have completed one year (nine months).

Preference will be given to South Dakota residents and students of South Dakota institutions.

Basic familiarity with power equipment operation of tractors, mowers, UTV's, power tools, chain saws and pulling trailers. Coursework in tree care and turf management practices, carpentry, and plumbing are beneficial. Position will require applicant to attain a Commercial Pesticide Applicators License with additional endorsements as needed within 2 weeks of employment.

Minimum Salary: $17.19
