Position Description:
Under the direction of the Human Dimensions Specialist, this paid internship will assist with all aspects of quantitative and qualitative social science data collection, data entry, and analysis of social science information focused on human dimensions aspects of fisheries and wildlife management, as well as parks and outdoor recreation management. The intern will be entering data and updating information in very large databases (Excel and Access), including using the data to make charts and tables. This position may help prepare and edit reports, technical summaries, and policy white papers. The intern will work independently to conduct literature reviews of science and policy research to inform survey content. The intern may also complete an independent project and present it to GFP leadership and staff. This is a data entry intensive position that requires a significant amount of sitting and computer work; however, depending on interests and skillset, this intern may be offered opportunities to gain a wide range of introductory experiences (e.g., assisting terrestrial and aquatic field biologists, learning from the GIS/spatial analysis team, developing content for the communications and social media team, or conservation law enforcement). The Summer 2022 internship dates are May through August (start and end dates are somewhat flexible). The position is located in Pierre, South Dakota. Housing is not included; however, a list of short-term options will be provided.

Qualifications :
Preferred Education, Knowledge, and Skills: College courses in social science or human dimensions of fish and wildlife management, and introductory statistics. Highly proficient in the use of computers and various software programs (e.g. Microsoft Suite, SPSS, NVivo, or other statistics programs), including data entry and quality control.

Required Education, Knowledge, and Skills: Pursuing an undergraduate or graduate a degree in Social Sciences, Public Administration, Recreation/Leisure Sciences, Political Science, Fisheries and Wildlife Biological Sciences, or equivalent degree from an accredited college or university with course work in social science surveying instruments and methods, natural resources resource planning, fisheries or wildlife ecology, conservation or management, statistics, and/or other human dimensions of natural resources management courses. Should possess direct experience conducting scientific literature reviews and clearly summarizing the information. Must be highly proficient in the use of computers and various software programs (e.g. Microsoft Suite, SPSS, NVivo, or other statistics programs), including data entry and quality control. Must be confident in entering data into Excel and using data to create charts and tables. Must be able to communicate effectively both orally and in writing, as well as establish and maintain effective working relationships. Must be organized, have a positive attitude, be reliable, and a self-starter.

Applicant must be a full-time student at a college, university or technical institute at the time they apply. By the start of the internship, the applicant should have at least a sophomore standing or currently be enrolled at a technical institute and have completed one year (nine months).

Preference will be given to applicants with a junior standing, South Dakota residents and students of South Dakota institutions.

Minimum Salary: $19.10 per hour
