The South Dakota Electrical Commission is seeking an organized and motivated individual to conduct inspections in the Miller area of South Dakota. South Dakota Electrical Inspectors may be exposed to dangerous environments with the possibility of electric shock from faulty electrical installations. Inspectors work from home but are required to travel to conduct inspections.

Licenses and Certifications:

Applicant must have a valid driver's license and hold an Electrical Inspector, Electrical Contractor, or Electrical Journeyman license and be eligible to be licensed at the electrical inspector level in South Dakota within the state probationary period of six months.

The Ideal Candidate Will Have:
  • an electrical Inspector license and experience work as an electrician.

Knowledge of:
  • applicable codes, laws, rules and regulations affecting electrical installation;
  • computer hardware and software including but not limited to: Word, Excel, Internet Explorer, Microsoft Mail, PowerPoint;
  • pertinent tools, equipment, and facilities.

Ability to:
  • inspect electrical installations and new construction to ensure compliance with electrical codes, laws, rules and regulations;
  • audit individuals conducting electrical installations in the state of South Dakota to ensure compliance with codes, laws, rules and regulations;
  • prepare clear, concise, and accurate written reports documenting installation infractions and day to day activities;
  • review and approve blueprints to ensure electrical sufficiency and safety;
  • ensure the practical safeguarding of persons and property from hazards arising from the use of electricity;
  • establish and maintain effective working relationships;
  • communicate information tactfully, clearly and concisely with licensees and public;
  • submit required paperwork and electronic reports in a timely manner;
  • plan and organize work priorities;
  • be flexible;
  • inspect in other areas of the state for up to 8 days;
  • work well with the general public;
  • drive for extended periods of time;
  • climb a ladder and navigate in tight spaces;
  • perform all duties documented and other duties as assigned.
