This is a Full-Time position with the Department of Corrections Behavioral Health team. For more information on the DOC, please visit https://doc.sd.gov .

This is a Full-Time 40 Hours Weekly serving as the Education and Programs Manager for the Department of Corrections (DOC). This position is responsible for researching curriculums and establishing best practice and evidence-based practice curriculums for our facility educators to deliver. This position would also conduct evaluation of the outcome data for each of the programs in all DOC facilities. This includes the Adult Education and Literacy program, Special Education program, Springfield Vocational Industries, and reentry and post secondary courses. The Manager oversees program operations, development, and implementation and evaluates instructors, teachers, and reentry staff to include approximately 26 staff across multiple sites. The Manager works closely with local community education teams, technical schools, the Department of Labor, and community based organizations to enhance educational, vocational, and reentry opportunities for offenders inside the correctional facilities. This position also works closely with facility program managers to oversee program operations, program development, and implementation.

The Ideal Candidate Will Have:

Bachelor's degree in Education or related program, with five years of experience in an adult education or correctional education program and/or three years of supervisory experience in corrections.

Duties will include:

  • Responsibility for the daily leadership and oversight of academic, vocational, and reentry programs;
  • Indirect supervision of vocational staff and collaboration and support of Reentry Corrections Specialists; and provides program direction to facility program managers and teachers;
  • Oversee compliance of the Adult Education and Literacy and Special Education program requirements;
  • Collaborate with the technical colleges and universities to develop and deliver adult educational programming, as well as academic and occupational opportunities for offenders;
  • Coordinate with the Department of Labor on statewide workforce opportunities and priorities;
  • Implement National Career Readiness programs and issue certificates;
  • Evaluate and oversee vocational programs within SD DOC facilities;
  • Collaborate with reentry staff develop systems and processes on a state wide basis to facilitate offender evidence based offender reentry strategies and services.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of:

  • South Dakota Department of Corrections operations;
  • Evidence Based Practices in corrections;
  • Career readiness standards and educational assessment tools; general knowledge of curriculum and instruction in adult education; general understanding of learning disabilities and the American Disabilties Act;
  • Educational technology applications geared to adult education in correctional institutions.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Demonstrate strong communication, writing, and organizational skills
  • Utilize technology effectively for data collection, reporting, and analysis
  • Build and maintain collaborative, productive working relationships
  • Write grants and ensure ongoing compliance with grant requirements
  • Perform well in a fast paced, constantly changing environment with security protocols
