BIT consists of five divisions - Administration, Enterprise Platform and Infrastructure, Development, Technology Operations and Communications, and South Dakota Public Broadcasting - which serve the State of South Dakota by providing technology solutions, services, and support. The Database Systems Engineer is a key position within the Enterprise Platforms and Infrastructure division.

The Bureau of Information and Technology is seeking a skilled professional Systems Engineer to work as a part of a team responsible for supporting and maintaining a range of critical IT systems. This role plays a vital part in ensuring the stability, performance, and security of enterprise infrastructure, including physical and virtual servers, Citrix environments, web and email services, Microsoft O365, and other cloud-based technologies.

The candidate will be required to live within the State of South Dakota. Selected candidate may have the option to work remote within the State of South Dakota.

The Ideal Candidate Will Have:
  • strong communication skills;
  • the ability to work effectively as both a team member and alone with minimal supervision; and,
  • the ability to form productive relationships with clients and other team members.

Knowledge of:

  • Microsoft Windows servers in an enterprise environment;
  • direct support of clients, either in person or on the phone in problem resolution situations;
  • Microsoft Windows Server Operating System support as well as various applications to be installed (IIS, web applications, virtual desktop applications);
  • concepts of centralized services offerings in an enterprise computing environment;
  • supporting a mission-critical environment of Microsoft Windows Servers, Using.NET Platform, Internet Information Services (IIS), Citrix and Load Balancing;
  • common Windows and networking concepts and protocols: DNS, HTTP, FTP, SFTP, Active Directory, and SSL/TLS;
  • clustering or high availability technologies;
  • Microsoft Powershell scripting;
  • Microsoft Exchange or Sharepoint environments on prem and cloud based;
  • security best-practices for data center infrastructure components.


Skill of:

  • supporting large-scale 24x7 operational production subsystems including maintenance, tuning, performance analysis, online reorganization strategy, security, and troubleshooting;
  • training/mentoring junior members of the systems engineering team;
  • information technology project management methodologies such as cost-benefit analysis and decision analysis;
  • continually improving standard processes for financial and risk analysis and systems engineering;
  • scheduling, planning, and supervising the installation and testing of new products, frameworks, and improvements to computer systems;
  • gathering data pertaining to customer needs, and using the information to identify, predict, interpret, and evaluate system requirements;
  • proposing new technologies, new technical and architectural strategies, and new processes to meet business challenges;
  • planning and installing upgrades of system software to enhance performance; and,
  • performing root-cause analysis of information technology system issues to prevent future occurrences.


Ability to:

  • communicate with technical and non-technical clients and translate their needs, ideas, or suggestions into logical solutions to business problems;
  • track multiple areas of responsibility with strong organizational skills;
  • accomplish assigned technical tasks with minimal supervision;
  • help develop and manage key performance metrics for various technical teams;
  • analyze and resolve information system errors;
  • maintain current documentation of installed systems;
  • work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment; and,
  • work on complex projects with team members, as well as other BIT staff and/or vendors.


This position is eligible for Veterans' Preference per ARSD 55:10:02:08.
